Elements of the Periodic Table under Microscope
Professor Winston Ingram has worked as a scientist, photographer, artist and musician for over fifty years. He is currently retired and resides in London. These images are from his periodic table of elements microscopy project. He photographed a selection of 85 different elements ranging is size from 0.05mm to 30mm under the microscope. While using the microscope he utilized a variety of microscopy techniques including polarization, brightfield, darkfield, phase contrast, DIC, hoffman modulation contrast, rheinberg filters and even one microscope fitted with a heine condenser. Ingram made 3″ x 1″ standard microscope slides for some of the samples, while others were used as supplied in small pieces. To obtain some effects he used a thermal imaging technique so he could photograph the heat signatures of the elements to show up in various colors.
